Raymond Ghajar

Dr. Raymond Ghajar was appointed Interim Dean of the School of Engineering (SOE) in September 2018 following a long career at LAU that started in 1995 as Professor and later Associate Dean at the SOE.

As head of one of the top engineering schools in the Middle East, Dr. Ghajar oversees the work of leading scientists and researchers of seven engineering disciplines and manages state-of-the-art equipment housed in the Byblos campus’ Engineering Laboratories and Research Center.

In addition to his academic role at LAU, Dr. Ghajar has been the Senior Energy Advisor at Lebanon’s Ministry of Energy and Water since 2007. He is the main author of the national energy policy that was approved by the Council of Ministers on June 21, 2010 and has worked on power plants ranging from 3 MW to over 500 MW using conventional technologies such as reciprocating engines and combined cycle gas turbines on tri-fuels, and renewable energies such wind and photovoltaics.

Dr. Ghajar specializes in power system reliability, renewable energy planning, production costing, power system analysis, utility restructuring, and spot pricing. He started his professional career with Ontario Hydro as a Technical Officer in the development section of the Power System Operation Division. He became the Power Pool Shift Engineer responsible for real-time scheduling at the Alberta Interconnected System Power Pool (AISPP). Later, he was appointed Senior Planning Engineer with Alberta Power Limited, responsible for generation planning, economic evaluation and rate-base preparation. Prior to joining LAU, he worked with Power Math Associates as a Senior Reliability Engineer in charge of developing new reliability tools, providing customer training and managing contracts.

Dr. Ghajar has authored numerous articles in leading international engineering journals, and has spoken and presented papers at conferences across the globe. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Order of Engineers in Lebanon.

Dr. Ghajar earned his B.S. from the University of Ottawa in 1983, and his M.S. and Ph.D., both in electrical engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, in 1987 and 1993 respectively.
