Dr. Sonia Y. Hajjar

Dr. Sonia Y. Hajjar was appointed Assistant Vice President for Finance - Budget and Grants in October 2009. Prior to this, she was Director of Budget and Financial Planning and Grants Coordinator since 2001.

As part of the Budget and Financial Planning Office, Dr. Hajjar assists in the planning and coordination of the university’s budgets and grants. She is also a member of the University Budget Committee, which oversees LAU’s operating and capital budget processes and presents recommendations to the Vice President of Finance.

Additionally, she coordinates the development, implementation and monitoring of the university’s budget with all of its constituents. She is responsible for the financial and administrative activities of all university research and academic grants from the proposal stage to close out. Dr. Hajjar also serves on various committees as required.

Prior to joining LAU in 1995 as the Associate Comptroller for the Byblos Campus, Dr. Hajjar was a financial and administrative consultant, and deputy country director, for Catholic Relief Services. She started her career at Deloitte & Touche in Beirut as a manager. From 1990 to 1995, she was a part-time instructor at the American University of Beirut (AUB) and LAU, where she taught courses in audit and accounting.

Dr. Hajjar has a Ph.D. in Economics and Management from the University of Liege in Belgium. She received her M.B.A. from AUB, where she also completed a B.A. in Business Administration. She is a member of the Lebanese Association of Certified Public Accountants, as well as of the National Association of College & University Business Officers.
