Regulations

 

Organizer

The Beirut Human Rights Film Festival (BHRFF) is organized by the Institute of Diplomacy and Conflict Transformation (IDCT), School of Arts and Sciences at the Lebanese American University, Byblos, Lebanon.


Partners

In partnership with the United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR), Middle East Office, Beirut, Lebanon and World Vision (WV), Beirut office, Lebanon.

 

Objectives

To encourage societies in the Middle East to use film as a powerful and effective means to defend human rights and respond to violations and abuses.

 


Participants

University students in film, audio visual and related majors from Lebanon are invited to produce short films within the assigned themes and take part in the film contest.

 


Phases

The Festival is a part of the project that consists of 3 phases: contest, festival and awareness campaign.
1. Participants produce short films focusing on human rights issues concerning Lebanon and the Middle East.
2. The films will be screened during one week of BHRFF in October 2008.
3. Selected films will be distributed to schools, universities and other organizations along with the supplementary educational material.

 


Date

The first edition of the BHRFF will be held from 27 October to 31 October, 2008.

 


Film Specification


Style: The festival accepts all styles including: documentary, fiction and animated films.


Themes: The festival theme is human rights. Participants should select one of the following:
1. Human Rights Abuses as a Cause of Violent Conflict.
2. Youth Responding to Human Rights Violations.
3. Children’s Rights.
4. Gender and Human Rights.


Human Rights Fact Sheet: Educational human rights fact sheet with references is available at IDCT web www.lau.edu.lb/academics/centers-institutes/idct/, to direct human rights research and film production.


Duration: Film concept should fit within the duration of 15 to 20 minutes.


Language: The film’s original language could be Arabic, English or French. English and French films must have Arabic subtitles. Arabic films must have either English or French subtitles.


Submission: Each submission should be sent in soft and hard copy.


1. Soft copy to idct.HRfilmfestival@lau.edu.lb including:
A. ENTRY FORM;
B. 4 photos from the film;
C. Photo of the Film Director;


2. Hard copy including:
A. 2 copies of the film on DVCAM and/or DVD;
B. Duly Signed ENTRY FORM;
C. 4 still photos from the film;
D. Photo of the Film Director;
E. Film publicity material; press kit/poster/pamphlet, if available

Deadline for submission: 17 June 2008.


Important Notes

1.  Participants are expected to come up with original, inventive and creative ideas.
2. Films which participated in other film festivals or general public screening will not be     considered.
3.  Applicant may submit more than one film.
4.  No entry fee to participate in the festival.
5.  Films submitted will not be returned; it is advisable to send the copies.
6.  All winning entries will be archived by the Festival.

 


Pre-selection - Committee

The Committee makes the first selection of films and takes into consideration whether the submission is duly completed. The rolling selection process is applied.

 


Selection - Festival Jury

During the selection process, the Jury takes into consideration how the films express the themes and reviews formal/technical requirements.

 


Awards

The festival culminates in awards: 1st Prize $ 3000; 2nd Prize $ 2000; 3rd Prize $ 1000.

Copy-Right


The organizers have the right to use the films and related publicity materials to promote the Festival.  Please refer to the Entry Form regarding copy-right.


Modification

The Festival reserves the right to make the necessary changes to the present Regulations.
