B.A. in Education
Mission
Under the umbrella of LAU’s Vision, the Mission of the Education Program is to prepare professional K-12 teachers who are academically well grounded in both their subject matter, and pedagogy, and to enable experienced educators to update their knowledge and skills..
Educational Objectives
The Education Program aims to prepare teachers who demonstrate:
- Relevant Knowledge – This includes:
- Depth and breadth in subject, and in content.
- General pedagogical knowledge.
- Specific pedagogical content knowledge.
- An awareness of the professional standards.
- An awareness of the developmentally appropriate practice (in early childhood education).
- An awareness of the national curriculum objectives and standards.
- Practical Skills
- Diverse approaches to instruction, and assessment.
- Effective classroom management strategies.
- Motivational strategies.
- Strategies to promote higher-level thinking.
- Guidance and Discipline methods.
- Appropriate Attitude
- Readiness to develop authentic relationships with students.
- Readiness to establish a democratic and socially just, learning environment.
- Readiness to reflect on one’s practice, and continuous learning.
Learning Outcomes
Graduates in the Bachelor of Arts in Education will be able to:
- Develop clear and measurable instructional objectives.
- Prepare yearly, term, and unit plans to adequately address curriculum content.
- Prepare plans for effective instructional cycles, using a variety of instructional approaches appropriate to the content/skill.
- Employ effective instructional practices that optimize learning opportunities.
- Use appropriate assessment methods, both formative and summative.
- Plan and implement effective classroom management strategies.
- Employ strategies to motivate students.
- Implement strategies that minimize discipline problems.
LAU offers two programs in Education:
- Early Childhood Education
- Elementary Education
The Early Childhood Education Program prepares students to:
- Plan and administer all the aspects of early childhood programs.
- Teach young students basic motor and cognitive skills through art, music, creative dramatics, and other techniques.
- Use carefully planned teaching strategies based on children’s developmental stages.
The
Elementary Education Program prepares students to:
- Teach children reading, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, drama, music, and physical education.
- Employ teaching strategies, which stimulate children’s thinking and challenge them to learn.
- Use the latest instructional tools, and techniques, to make your teaching more effective.
All Programs of study include:
The Core Requirements - These include the General Education courses.
The Emphasis Requirements – These include courses in the content area, such as English, Arabic, Social Studies, Math, and Science, Drama, etc…, and courses in Methods, such as teaching of social studies, Art Education etc…
