Teaching Diploma

Mission

Under the umbrella of LAU's vision, the mission of the Education Program, as well as the Teaching Diplomas, is to prepare future teachers who are academically and personally qualified to promote LAU as a top class institution ad to demonstrate leadership in their places of employment.

Objectives

The Teaching Diplomas at aim to prepare teachers who demonstrate:

  1. Relevant knowledge

    1. depth and breadth in subject and content
    2. general pedagogical knowledge
    3. specific pedagogical content knowledge
    4. awareness of developmentally appropriate practice
    5. awareness of professional standards
    6. awareness of the curriculum objectives and standards.
  2. Practical skills

    1. diverse approaches to instruction and assessment
    2. motivational strategies
    3. strategies to promote higher-level thinking
  3. Appropriate attitude

    1. readiness to develop authentic relationships with students
    2. readiness to establish democratic and socially just learning environment
    3. readiness to reflect on one’s practice and continuous learning.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Distinguish the different theories of education and understand their impact on the curriculum.
  2. Develop clear and measurable instructional objectives.
  3. Plan units, lessons, curricular materials, and activities for teaching.
  4. Select and implement appropriate strategies for teaching specific subjects at the early, elementary, or secondary level.
  5. Organize learning environments and implement theories of child guidance and behavioral management to create positive classroom atmosphere.
  6. Act as problem solvers and make appropriate and informed decisions in teaching/ learning situations using critical thinking and analysis.
  7. Plan strategies and prepare tools for assessing students' achievement (formal as well a informal assessment).
  8. Pursue professional development opportun ties as life long learners.

The program provides two options:

The Teaching Diploma consists of 18 credits to be taken over and above a bachelor’s degree requirements. These 21 credits may be taken in combination with the bachelor’s major courses or as a post-B.A./B.S. program in one academic year.
