Summer School on Conflict Prevention and Resolution

In collaboration with the United Nations, IPJE will host a two-week summer school on conflict prevention and transformation at LAU's Byblos Campus, August 15-29, 2004. The topics include: Introduction to conflict, the root causes and triggers of violent conflict, causes of the Lebanese civil war, the political economy of civil wars, the UN and conflict resolution in the Middle East, prevention of violent conflict, power sharing and constitutional reform in Lebanon, and conflict resolution from the bottom-up.

Several international experts will speak during the summer school, which will also include hands-on conflict resolution training by experienced international and local trainers. More information is available at www.un.org.lb.

Who can apply?

Admission to the program is competitive and open to qualified Lebanese university students. Priority will be given to students in the field of social sciences. Applicants from other disciplines will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Successful candidates should be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to making a positive impact on Lebanese society.

The residential program is offered free of charge to the qualifying applicants. The packet includes all summer school materials, accommodation at the LAU Byblos Inn residential hall in double rooms, all meals and refreshments, and a social program. At the conclusion of the program, all participants will receive a certificate of participation issued by the United Nations and the Lebanese American University.
