The Lebanese American University (LAU) announces a search for the Dean of the Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine (SOM). The University is an American, non-sectarian, coeducational, liberal arts, and professional studies university. It is governed by a Board of Trustees who derive their authority from the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. The Board of Trustees at LAU is a private, autonomous, international board composed of US, Lebanese, and other Arab citizens. The University is committed to academic excellence, student-centeredness, the advancement of scholarship, the education of the whole person, and the formation of students as future leaders in a diverse world.
The University has an enrollment of over 8000 students, representing 68 nationalities, two campuses: Beirut and Byblos, and seven (7) Schools: Arts & Sciences, Business, Engineering, Architecture & Design, Pharmacy (the Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education renewed the accreditation of our Pharm. D. program, which is the only program accredited outside the United States), Medicine, and Nursing, 605 faculty members including 244 full-time. Seventy-one percent of full-time faculty have Ph.D.s. The student / faculty ratio is 20:1 and all instruction is in English.
Established in 2006, the School of Medicine has an affiliation with University Medical Center-Rizk Hospital (UMC-RH) which was acquired in 2009, serves as the main clinical facility for the School of Medicine, the School of Pharmacy, and the School of Nursing, and is located in Ashrafiyeh, East Beirut. The University is currently constructing on the Byblos campus a new building for the School of Medicine which should be completed in 2011. The new Dean will understand and communicate the current LAUSOM vision which aims at: providing talented men and women with the opportunity to pursue an American medical education guided and informed by American medical standards; improving healthcare delivery in Lebanon; and including community based service into the School’s medical program. LAU Medical School aims for regional pre-eminence by adopting strategic objectives which will establish triangular collaborations among local and regional affiliated teaching hospitals, our partners in American medicine, and LAU. This will create a regional hub for training, and a strong basic science and clinical research base, while LAU-affiliated hospitals will aim to become regional patient referral points.
LAUSOM will conclude academic relationships with major American and European medical institutions and create training and employment opportunities for its graduates in America and Europe. LAUSOM’s vision for the new physician is based on graduating humane and passionate healers, who provide excellent healthcare to their patients, establish excellent interpersonal relationship with them and their loved ones, show sensitivity to death and life issues, and adhere to the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and medical ethics. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to a new curriculum based on a new pedagogical philosophy, integration of basic and clinical sciences in innovative system modules, and problem-based learning in small groups of medical students, and continue to recruit outstanding faculty and staff committed to implementing the School’s plans and fulfill its aspirations. The successful candidate will have a track record of management and innovation within the field of Medical Education. The new Dean’s responsibilities will include: providing fiscal integrity of the SOM; exercising leadership in fund raising and establishment of capital development programs; communicating the goals, mission, and initiatives of the SOM in national and international health care arenas; developing strategic relationships with local, regional, and international private and public health care providing institutions; leading a Medical School with a unique mission in the region; promoting excellence in teaching and medical research; coordinating faculty activities that promote the School’s educational objectives, strengthen its academic standards, achieve accreditation of its various academic programs, and establish an internationally recognized clinical program for its medical students.
The minimum requirements for the new Dean should include: a doctorate degree in medicine or a PhD; effective academic leadership experience; substantial administrative leadership and a distinguished record of scholarly achievements; teaching; research; professional development and service sufficient to merit appointment at the rank of full professor.
