Assistant Director for Development – Prospect Research

Overview:
The Assistant Director for Development – Prospect Research conducts research; identifies and presents significant information on prospects, donors, individuals, foundations, business firms and private groups; and provides other background information that enables the LAU NY administration and development officers to carry out fundraising efforts, alumni activities and other related functions. Additional responsibilities include the tracking of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities. Research activities are expected to be both reactive and proactive. The incumbent will also be expected to undertake some proposal writing assignments.
This position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Development in NYC. The incumbent is also expected to maintain regular, proactive contact with the Vice President for University Advancement, the Director of Alumni and Special Events and the Director of Major Gifts.
Duties (including but not limited to):
- Using subscription and free resources, compile biographical, financial, historical and professional information on individuals and organizations of interest to LAU
- Analyze and interpret information and prepare research profiles on prospects
- Proactively identify new prospects by keeping abreast of news publications, corporate and foundation reports, business data, etc. to uncover timely information about alumni, donors and donor prospects, as well as trends in higher education philanthropy
- Generate relevant lists and data for use in reviews of activities related to the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major donors and major donor prospects
- Manage the agenda for periodic major prospect review sessions
- In coordination with the Office of Advancement Services, maintain updated donor and prospect information in Raiser’s Edge and produce reports from Raiser’s Edge as requested
- Produce prospect management activity reports and other analyses as needed
- Provide research for special projects as assigned Keep abreast of new data resources and recommend new research resources and techniques as they become available
- Write proposals as assigned, under the supervision of the Assistant Vice President
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Demonstrated experience in prospect research, preferably in an academic setting
- Knowledge of fundraising, preferably with experience in higher education fundraising
- Strong written and oral communications skills
- Familiarity with word processing programs, spreadsheet software, presentation software and Raiser’s Edge or similar database systems
