Libraries launch ZPortal

A library portal is a search engine that taps into many resources, allowing a user to retrieve information from several databases in one session and with a standardized look.

Library portals are beneficial to researchers and libraries because:

The LAU libraries are currently testing such an application, called ZPortal. All users are welcome to try it out and contact the Electronic Resources Librarian (houeida.charara@lau.edu.lb) for questions or inquiries.

Riyad Nassar Library opens doors

The Beirut Campus has made another expansion leap with the opening of a new complex that includes new library facilities.

With 8,000 square meters, the 11-floor library building has almost tripled the space available at its former home, the LRC building.

The Riyad Nassar Library — named after LAU’s former president — is part of the 24,000-square-meter project built on what used to be a parking lot. Besides the library, the project includes underground parking space and a building for the Business School.

Furnishing and relocation of materials are still ongoing, but the library was operational in time for the beginning of classes. There is plenty of space to be used for open stacks, study rooms, special-needs areas, and many other new features.

The new library can house up to 350,000 information records on all types of media, plus various electronic resources.

Technology will remain a top priority. Over the last decade a number of online services were added, the latest example being ZPortal Federated search engine. This trend will continue, coupled with the Electronic Resources Librarian, who will train and help users with their online search for information.

According to LRC Director Aida Naaman, 124 workstations will be available to library staff and users, and, online resources will be developed according to curriculum and research needs.

Mrs. Naaman anticipates the need for further conversion into digital media as library space will always be at a premium. “There will never be enough space in any library to accommodate all the needs,” unless information technology comes to the rescue, she said.

With its spacious premises, expanding resources and new services, the Riyad Nassar Library poses some management challenges. In its previous incarnation, the facility served an average of 1,200 students per day. Mrs. Naaman said the possibility of opening until 11 p.m. on weekdays and opening on Sunday afternoons is a possibility on the future. That would mean the creation of two shifts of staff. Assistants will also be constantly required to staff the eight floors of open stacks.
