Danish ambassador lectures on role of small states

Danish Ambassador to Lebanon Jan Top Christensen lectured on “The Role and Possibilities of a Small State in International Relations,” using Denmark as an example, Apr. 11. Christensen argued that through its participation and membership in powerful international bodies such as the EU, NATO and UN, Danes have been able to protect themselves while playing an influential role in international affairs. The event was held at LAU Byblos, and was organized by LAU’s Institute of Diplomacy and Conflict Transformation in cooperation with the International Affairs Unit and International Affairs Club.

International affairs students visit Finance Ministry

A delegation from the LAU Byblos International Affairs Club visited the Lebanese MOF’s Institute of Finance on Feb. 18 to learn about the government’s fiscal policy and the interaction between the private and public sectors on the micro and macro levels. Experts from the institute explained to the students the basics of money management in the country, the implementation of regressive and progressive taxation, the severity of the Lebanese debt increase, and the interaction between MOF and other ministries.

Talk about U.S. role in Lebanon's security

Thaddeus Kontek, director of the U.S. Embassy’s International Law Enforcement Programs Office, presented the challenges and opportunities of U.S. assistance to the Lebanese state, during a lecture at LAU Beirut, Jan. 12. Kontek focused on how his office finances and trains Lebanese security forces, including the Internal Security Forces and the Lebanese Armed Forces. The event was part of the public lectures series organized by Dr. Imad Salamey, LAU assistant professor of political science, in his classes.

Student filmmaker wins recognition at university festival

Elie Rizk, a student in LAU faculty member Tony Farjallah’s filmmaking class on the Byblos campus, won the third prize in the NDU Film Festival Nov. 14 for his film The Examination. Over 40 films from various universities in Lebanon competed in the festival.

The stage is set for LAU's annual theater festival

University student thespians from across the world will gather at LAU Beirut for the 13th LAU International University Theater Festival, organized by the Department of Communication Arts, Jul. 22–28. Student theater troupes from Lebanon, The Netherlands, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Kuwait and Syria will stage 22 play productions. Besides the performances, a variety of activities will take place, including workshops, music concerts, and poetry reading.

Forum explores PR industry in the region

Building on the success of the inaugural 2009 edition, the 2nd Beirut Public Relations Forum expanded into a two-day event, held at the Gefinor Rotana Hotel in Beirut, Jul. 7–8, under the patronage of Lebanon’s Minister of Information Dr. Tarek Mitri. Organized by TRACCS, a regional PR network, in collaboration with The Institute for Media Training and Research at LAU, the forum explored strategic issues in the region’s PR industry through a series of presentations, panel discussions and workshops, held under the theme of “Brilliance,” and led by respected regional and global communications experts.

LAU MUN trainer appointed to global conference secretariat

LAU Model UN trainer Khaled Kabbara has been appointed as the undersecretary-general for General Assembly Affairs and Conference Management in the second annual Global MUN Conference 2010 secretariat. The conference, organized by the UN Department of Public Information, will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Aug. 14–18. LAU MUN delegation meets with Lebanese president

The five high schoolers who represented the LAU MUN program and won six awards at the international UNA–USA Model UN Conference in New York in May, visited Lebanese President Michel Sleiman, June 24. The LAU delegation was headed by LAU President Dr. Joseph Jabbra and included Dr. Elise Salem, VP SDEM; Elie Samia, director of the LAU MUN program and of the Byblos Guidance Office; Christian Oussi, director of PR; and George Badawi, secretary-general of this year’s LAU MUN. President Sleiman congratulated the students, and called on further advancing the culture of political and cultural diversity among Lebanese youth.

LAU students win medals in taekwondo championship

Four LAU students achieved outstanding results in their respective weight categories in the Lebanese national taekwondo championships (red belt) held Apr. 25, in Champville. Vicky Kesrwan and Sana Chahine won gold medals, while Melhem Akouri and Naji Ghaziri got bronze. More than 200 players from clubs and universities across the country competed in the different weight categories.

Iraqi artist presents artwork about her country

Iraqi artist Alia al Wahab presented her latest work to LAU fine arts and foundation students, Apr. 14, LAU Beirut. Her latest exhibit revolves around Iraq, its political strife and violent moments. Inspired by the environment, she experimented with mixed media and heavy surface textures to create powerful abstractions incorporating newspaper documentaries and her own graphic expressions in paint. At the LAU event organized by faculty member Mona Jabbour, al Wahab presented a few paintings and showed images of her work.
