About course numbers

Course names are typically preceded by a six-character code (e.g. ENG101) that provides information about the field of study and level of each course.

• The course prefix is a three-letter designator for an academic discipline, subject matter and/or subcategory of knowledge (see list below).
• The first digit next to the prefix represents the level of the course: 1 for freshman; 2 for sophomore; 3 for junior; 4 for senior; 5 for the fifth year in engineering and pharmacy; 6 for the sixth year in pharmacy; and 7 and 8 for the graduate level.
• The next two digits represent a sequence number.
