In an inspirational speech the late Robert Kennedy said: “Some men see things as they are and they ask why? I dream of things that never were and ask why not?”

Dear Graduating students, you’re our shining hope and inspiring reality. You came to LAU to dream about your future and begin to realize your highest and most noble aspirations. You came to LAU determined to excel academically, to grow personally, and hone your social skills.

At LAU, you found a passionately committed faculty ready to guide your intellectual advancement and academic maturity; you found a staff that is always ready to respond to your most pressing need and to serve you with profound devotion and exemplary dedication; and at LAU you have received the best advising and most appropriate career counselling.

Unfortunately, the hour of separation is upon us and we don’t like it. Very soon we won’t be able to see you and greet you daily on the Byblos or Beirut campus, and this is very hard for us to accept.

Our only consolation is that you will go out and find fulfilling jobs. More importantly, you will carry with you the values that you have internalized at LAU and become true agents of change and reform that our beloved Lebanon and region need so sorely. You will say no to sectarianism that brought our society to the abyss of disintegration. You will say no to corruption that has wreaked havoc in our beloved countries. You will honor human dignity, promote the rule of law, strengthen gender equality, and create a caring community.

With the hope that you provide to all of us, we can repeat with the late Robert Kennedy why not? And we can say with the late Martin Luther King, Jr, our dream to have all Lebanese free of poverty and discrimination, with their freedom and dignity fully restored, will become a reality soon.

I take this opportunity to congratulate you and in particular to greet and congratulate your parents and loved ones who stood by you in the past and will continue to be on your side in the future.

One final request, please join our alumni so that you will continue to be valued members of our LAU special family, and wherever you go, wherever you are, whatever you do, don’t forget LAU.

With my best wishes,

Joseph G. Jabbra, Ph.D.,
