The School of Medicine / Department of Human Genetics is currently looking for a Clinical Cytogenetics Lab Supervisor reporting to department Chair. This position is based on Byblos campus.
Role Summary
The Clinical Cytogenetics Lab Supervisor is mainly responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Lab as well as coordinating and organizing the different Lab sections and experiments.
Additionally he/she performs genetic diagnostic testing related to the field of genetics, in particular conventional molecular cytogenetics related to Mendelian diseases and to oncology.
He/she takes ownership of all Lab equipment and apparatus making sure they are in good operating conditions, and ensures the proper scheduling of Lab sessions.
Furthermore, the Clinical Cytogenetics Lab Supervisor coordinates and assists faculty members to develop new experiments and formulate instructional modules for existing and proposed experiments, as well as coordinates research activities and assists in recording, compiling, and organizing data as required.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Organizes all aspects of the Lab: preparing equipment; preparing, collecting and setting up of Lab experiments; calibrating equipment and making necessary modifications before each lab session, analyzing the experiments, and reporting the results
- Supervises Lab assistants to ensure that solutions and other requirements for proper Lab sessions are provided, cleaning and disinfection of plates, tubes, benches etc. following the Lab sessions are properly accomplished
- Trains students on the correct use of Lab equipment
- Coordinates and provides assistance to faculty to develop new experiments and formulate instructional modules for existing and proposed experiments
- Performs routine Lab pre-testing for all experiments to validate their accuracy. Discusses recommended changes with concerned faculty to enhance the students’ experience. Makes sure that all safety standards are constantly preserved
- Keeps track of all new acquisitions to ensure they are stored properly and are well identified
- Maintains equipment in a functional state arranging for repairs and ordering replacements for worn-out or outdated items
- Orders supplies and equipment to upgrade the Lab. Prepares requisition orders for all supplies and equipment needed for the Lab after consulting with the concerned Faculty members
- Stores and disposes hazardous wastes using safety procedures
- Assists in the production of new Lab manuals by revising existing ones and learning from previous experiences to enhance these manuals
- Monitors lab safety measures and establishes necessary procedures and systems to avoid potential hazards
- Documents information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books
- Performs other duties pertinent to this job as assigned
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with relevant specialization in Human Genetics, Cytogenetics (classical and molecular), or related fields
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a lab setting related to Human Genetics and molecular diagnosis
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with students, physicians, and faculty members
- Strong English and Arabic verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organization and management skills
- MS Office skills; experience with Software related to Cytogenetics is highly desirable
