The Lebanese American University (LAU) announces a search for Dean of the Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine.

The Dean is responsible for the clinical and teaching strategy and oversight within the Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine. He / She will plan and implement academic, clinical, and financial strategies that will allow for a highly effective School of Medicine that is committed to promoting competitive research and accreditations of the various clinical and educational programs in full coordination with the LAU Medical Center (LAUMC-RH).

LAU is a not-for-profit American institution of higher education, chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. It is an independent, non-sectarian, coeducational, liberal arts and professional studies University governed by an independent and private Board of Trustees. The University is committed to academic excellence, student-centeredness, the advancement of scholarship, the education of the whole person, Outreach and Civic Engagement, and the formation of students as future leaders in a diverse world.

The University has an enrollment of over 8,300 students representing 78 nationalities on two campuses: Beirut and Byblos. The University is comprised of the Schools of Architecture & Design, Arts & Sciences, Business, Engineering, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy, and has 795 faculty members including 308 full-time faculty, in addition to 58 full-time clinical physicians. Seventy-six percent of full-time faculty have doctoral degrees. The student/faculty ratio is 16:1 and all instruction is in English.

I. Organizational Relationship

The Dean reports to the Provost and collaborates with the Chief Medical Officer of LAUMC-RH on the clinical and teaching strategy and oversight.

The successful candidate should have the following qualifications: A doctor of medicine with the rank of full professor and certification in his/her specialty with a minimum of ten (10) years of senior and effective academic leadership experience; distinguished record of scholarly achievements in teaching, research and professional development in a health-related field; strong strategic, communication and diplomacy skills; fluent in English (Proficiency in Arabic is a plus); strong interpersonal skills; strong organizational and administrative skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; experience with faculty, physician relations, and students outreach with an undivided compliance with the requirements for medical and other authorized staff membership as necessitated by the LAUMC-RH Medical Staff Bylaws;

II. Duties and Responsibilities of Position

The position will entail the following duties and responsibilities:

A.    Administration

Recruits and develops a strong academic and administrative leadership team of associate deans, chairpersons, directors and executive administrators to unite and inspire a highly effective organization that is committed to promoting competitive research, accreditations of the various educational and clinical programs; develops unique partnerships and affiliations with other hospitals and/or other local and international institutions and foundations; applies strong advocacy of School of Medicine issues on a medical center, University and regional level; serves as the public image and voice for the School of Medicine in all activities, including the hospital affiliates, donors following due process; works in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer of LAUMC-RH to shape the clinical experience of the students; sets and evolves the curriculum within the School of Medicine.

B.     Program Development

Provides visionary leadership and support that enable the School of Medicine to achieve and sustain top ranked status in research, accreditations and clinical and educational missions; develops a strong philanthropic base to support and endow the programs of the School of Medicine; implements a clinical initiative characterized by quality, safety, evidence-based and patient-centered medicine.

C.     Professional Development

Ensures that the School of Medicine has a strong mentorship and professional development process to allow for faculty advancement; promotes and enhances diversity and inclusion among faculty, staff, and students; promotes and enhances diversity in the process of education, conduct of research and delivery of patient care services.

D.    General Responsibilities

The Dean shall be devoted full-time to the completion of his/her duties in keeping with the terms of his/her job description. In case the successful candidate is a clinician, his/her clinical work should be significantly limited and the candidate should perform all duties as relevant and appropriate to the position and as assigned by the Provost or President of LAU.
