English Proficiency Scores

English is the official language of instruction at LAU and applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the language by submitting the official scores of ONE of following tests:

Based on your test results, you may be required to take, or may be exempted from, certain courses at LAU. The chart below explains the basic rules:

You will be placed in the Intensive English Program and start with IEP003. You are not allowed to start with the major courses.

The first English course you must register for is ENG009 Remedial English, a non-credit course (three hours of instruction weekly, but no credits are counted)

The first English course you must register for is ENG101 Academic English I. You are exempt from ENG009 Remedial English.

The first English course you must register for is ENG102 Academic English II.
You are exempt from ENG009 Remedial English and ENG101 Academic English I.

  • SAT I Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 640 or higher
  • ACT Writing 10 or higher
  • IELTS 8 or higher
  • Duolingo English Test 145 or higher

The first English course you have to register for is ENG 202 Advanced Academic English
You are exempt from ENG009 Remedial English, ENG101 Academic English I, and ENG102 Academic English II.
