LAU is currently looking for an Academic Advising Senior Assistant Coordinator reporting to the Dean of Students. This position is based in Beirut campus.
Role Summary
- The Academic Advising Senior Assistant Coordinator is responsible for advising and guiding students throughout their program of study.
- He/she assists in the registration process, selection and sequencing of courses and advise on admissions and transfer of credits, Lebanese Baccalaureate equivalence, change of major, exchange programs, petitions, academic difficulties, academic performance assessment, computer GPA, SAT requirements, and unofficial clearance.
- The Advisor must remain up to date on all School administrative and academic rules and regulations impacting students including curricular changes and to that effect is a member of the appropriate School councils. He/she coordinates closely with designated faculty advisors and with students’ instructors to ensure that students’ progress adequately and have all the academic, emotional and adjustment support needed.
- In addition, the Advisor detects students at risk and provides appropriate monitoring by offering advice about university regulations and the many services available to them. He/she participates in the general student Orientation and other student activities as needed and develops an action plan for creating a trusting relationship with the students and a special bond that promotes student retention and success.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Advise and inform current students on offered programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, on course selection, on academic regulations and all aspects related to academic requirements.
- Analyze the academic performance of students at the end of each semester and take appropriate actions such as class promotion, place on probation, suspension or withdrawal from Program or School in compliance with School and University regulation.
- Provide one-on-one advising to all newly admitted students and help them efficiently register their courses.
- Ensure appropriate and timely follow-ups with students in explaining academic rules and the many services available to them so they take informed decisions to secure their progress and university success.
- Screen and identify students with academic difficulties, evaluate their situation and identify the problems. Meet with them, establish action plans, advise them and propose mentoring activities in collaboration with all available resources at the University. Ensure the appropriate tracking and follow-up.
- Identify students with emotional, legal, financial, medical and career oriented problems and refer them to pertinent services.
- In the framework of graduation, and in coordination with the Registrar’s office, assist in analyzing and evaluating files for clearance.
- Participate in the revision of data in Banner, CAPP and in their updating procedure and details.
- Work with the Advising team on updating and maintaining the central Advising website.
- Create a trusting relationship with students and LAU community and a special bond that promotes student retention and academic success.
- Perform any other function/project assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum 1-2 years’ experience in a related capacity.
- Excellent written and spoken English; Arabic is a plus
- Communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Technical and computer skills
- Readiness to work closely with students on assisting them
- Willingness to learn about secondary and postsecondary curricula and the University’s academic regulations
- Ability to analyze student records and interpret, explain and apply university regulations
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to work under pressure, and meet strict deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exhibit high ethics
- Team player
