Part-Time Faculty Position, Sustainable Energy

The School of Arts and Sciences at the Lebanese American University is launching the new Liberal Arts and Science Curriculum. The Curriculum is innovative in its pedagogic approach and its intellectual foci. It consists of several pillars that engage students in
A) learning about topical issues and becoming Change Makers;
B) acquiring technical knowledge that will allow them to compete in an increasingly complex professional environment of Digital Cultures, and
C) engaging in High Impact Experiences to become global citizens and stewards of the world they inhabit.
For this round of recruitment, we are focusing on pillar A) Change Makers. We invite qualified candidates to apply for a Part-Time teaching position in the Department of Liberal Education to deliver a course on Sustainable Energy to be offered to undergraduate students from various schools. This course explores conventional and renewable energy with a particular focus on the progress towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7: Ensure Access to Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable, and Clean Energy for All. Energy systems are covered from technical, environmental, economic, social, and policy perspectives. An overview of various energy resources and technologies is provided, including fossil fuels, nuclear, biomass, hydropower, geothermal, ocean, wind, and solar energy. The promise and limitation of each technology are examined in the framework of achieving energy sustainability on local, regional, and global scales.
The course has been designed to allow students to
- Outline local and global energy trends: demand, consumption, generation, trade, and investment
- Describe the fundamentals of conventional and renewable energy technologies
- Evaluate the potential and limitation of various energy technologies in ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and clean energy
- Assess the environmental impact of energy production and the relationship between energy production, consumption, and climate change
- Examine the role of energy policies in increasing energy efficiency and sustainability
- Identify best practices and solutions to improve residential energy usage in terms of efficiency and sustainability
Applicants must possess the following essential qualifications:
- A Master’s or Doctoral degree in Basic Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or Engineering with emphasis on Sustainable Energy.
- Experience in teaching undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines
- Evidence of using innovative teaching methods with non-specialized audiences
- Good theoretical knowledge in the field of energy.
- A deep understanding of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the UN.
- Knowledge and/or experience of the social and economic impact of energy at the local and global levels.
- Familiarity with local, regional, and global policies related to sustainable energy.
- Good written and oral English communication.
- Good organizational skills and ability to work in a team-based environment.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience using Blackboard
- Experience delivering Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
