The School of Arts and Sciences at the Lebanese American University is launching the new Liberal Arts and Science Curriculum. The Curriculum is innovative in its pedagogic approach and its intellectual foci. It consists of several pillars that engage students in
A) learning about topical issues and becoming Change Makers;
B) acquiring technical knowledge that will allow them to compete in an increasingly complex professional environment of Digital Cultures, and
C) engaging in High Impact Experiences to become global citizens and stewards of the world they inhabit.
For this round of recruitment, we are focusing on pillar A) Change Makers. We invite qualified candidates to apply for a Part-Time teaching position in the Department of Liberal Education to deliver a course on Wellbeing and/or a course on Poverty to be offered to undergraduate students from the various schools.
The wellbeing course has been designed to allow students to:
- Define public health, and its unique contributions to the wellbeing of the public
- List the major determinants of health and reflect on health inequalities in various socio-political contexts including instability
- Identify potential psychological and socio-economic stressors and their impact on the wellbeing of individuals and their families
- Reflect on protective factors promoting wellbeing such as social support, spirituality and resilience
- Describe coping mechanisms enhancing wellbeing and mental health following stressful events
The poverty course has been designed to allow students to:
- Identify the dimensions of poverty that help contextualize issues related to global and local poverty.
- Reflect on factors contributing to poverty and perpetuating its cycle (financial, geographical, political, social).
- Analyze the relationship between different poverty-related challenges and their consequences.
- Demonstrate the impact of poverty across the lifespan.
- Evaluate programs and policies aimed at the reduction of poverty and its related challenges.
- Suggest ways to reduce the impact of poverty in the local community.
Applicants must possess the following essential qualifications:
- A Master’s or Doctoral degree in Psychology or a related field with an emphasis on Wellbeing
- Good theoretical knowledge of the determinants of wellbeing or poverty and associated risk-factors as well as protective factors.
- Knowledge and/or experience of the physical, mental, social and economic impact of wellbeing/poverty at the individual and community levels.
- A minimum of two years of undergraduate teaching experience
- Evidence of using innovative teaching methods with non-specialized audiences
- A deep understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the UN.
- Good written and oral English communication.
- Good organizational skills and ability to work in a team-based environment.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience using Blackboard
- Experience delivering Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
