The LAU Medical Center – Saint John’s Hospital (LAUMC-SJH) is currently looking for a Chief Executive Officer reporting to LAU Vice President for Health Affairs.Role Summary
The Chief Executive Officer serves as the leader of LAUMC-SJH and its primary public representative. Also, the CEO directs the Management team to ensure that the organization fulfills its mission and creates strategies that ensure its future success.
The CEO is finally responsible for leading hospital wide efforts to accelerate changes/improvements to achieve recognition of LAUMC-SJH as a university medical center that provides excellent patient care and satisfaction.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
A- Management and Administration
- Oversees the operations of LAUMC-SJH and manages its compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
- Creates and maintains procedures for implementing plans approved by the President and the Vice-President for Health Affairs
- Promotes a culture that reflects LAUMC-SJH values, encourages excellent performance, and rewards productivity
- Appoints and manages an individual who will act in the absence of the Chief Executive Officer when he / she is not available
- Appoints and manages a highly qualified Chief Medical Officer subject to the prior approval of the LAU President and the LAU Vice President for Health Affairs
- Appoints and manages a highly qualified Chief Financial Officer subject to the prior approval of the LAU President, the LAU Vice President for Health Affairs, and the LAU Vice President for Finance
- Appoints and manages highly qualified “C-Suite” Officers subject to the prior approval of the LAU President and the LAU Vice President for Health Affairs
- Appoints a group of professional personnel to develop and periodically review policies to govern the services provided by the Hospital
- Leads support services to ensure centralization with LAUMC-RH and LAU where applicable, subject to the prior approval of the LAU President, the LAU Vice President for Health Affairs and the LAU Vice President for Administration
- Ensures that the Hospital meets all standards for certification and licensure, and staff members are appropriately educated regarding the certification and licensure requirements of this Hospital
- Monitors daily patient census to assure optimal use of available resources and effective and timely management of patients along the continuum of care
- Coordinates and facilitates the integration of improvement efforts focused on patient experience and workplace of choice outcomes
B- Fiscal and Resource Management
- In keeping with policy, implements an appropriate budget planning process for the Hospital, prepares the annual operating and capital budgets, and submits these for review and input by the LAU President, Vice President for Health Affairs, and the LAU Vice President for Finance
- Monitors and controls on-going revenue and expense performance of the Hospital, comparing actual performance to the approved budget and preparing and submitting monthly budget variance reports with plan of action to remedy discrepancies
- Prudently manages the organization’s resources within budget guidelines according to applicable laws and regulations
- Ensures that staff practices all appropriate accounting procedures in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or equivalent
- Provides prompt, thorough, and accurate information to keep the LAU President, Vice President for Health Affairs, and the LAU Vice President for Finance appropriately informed of the organization’s financial position
- Develops fund raising strategies and conducts fund raising activities with the LAU President, the Vice President for Health Affairs and the LAU Vice President for Advancement
C- Liaison and Coordination
- Serves as the primary spokesperson and representative for the organization
- Ensures that LAUMC-SJH and its mission, programs, and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders
- Coordinates program development activities with clinical staff in keeping with the strategic direction and plan for the Hospital in accordance with the LAU Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine, the LAU Alice Ramez Chagoury School of Nursing, and the LAU School of Pharmacy
- Serves as the administrative liaison with the Hospital’s medical staff and the medical community at large
- Fosters a culture of excellence and patient care and collegial respect and collaboration
- Cooperates and actively collaborates with other LAU hospital administrations, including LAUMC-RH Hospital in the best interest of LAU and its affiliates, in an effort to streamline resources of all concerned entities
- Acts as a liaison with governmental bodies, social security, Ministry of Public Health, and related bodies
D- Strategic Planning, Marketing, Evaluation and Quality Assurance
- Directs the Hospital’s strategic planning set by the President and the Vice-President for Health Affairs and in the context of an overarching LAU Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine strategic plan
- Collaborates with the LAU Vice President for Health Affairs to define and articulate the organization’s vision and develop strategies
- Oversees all activities related to marketing and communication of programs and services.
- Establishes, implements, monitors and, on a quarterly basis, analyzes results of performance evaluation as a qualitative and quantitative means of accountability
- Establishes means to assure quality care of persons treated and optimal utilization of resources through such systems as utilization review, case record review, quality assurance, productivity analysis, and cost accounting program areas
- Maintains awareness of the marketplace and the Hospital’s competitive position
- Ensures the operation of policies and procedures that maintain timely patient referral and admission processes
- Develops referral sources for the Hospital and maintains contact with referral sources
E- Professional Awareness
- Maintains active involvement in local, regional, and international organizations as reasonable and appropriate
- Remains current with changes in the marketplace, technologies, status of legislation, and trends impacting the Hospital
- Performs all duties as relevant and appropriate to the position as assigned by the LAU President and the LAU Vice President for Health Affairs
Minimum Required Qualifications
- University graduate; preferably in Public Health or Business Administration
- Master’s, MBA or Post-graduate degree in Hospital Management or Public Health is a major asset
- Minimum of 15 years of overall hospital operations or management experience in the healthcare sector in Lebanon or in the region, out of which 7 years are in a senior managerial and leadership role within well-established hospitals or medical centers in Lebanon or the region
- Proven successful work experience and track record in healthcare
- Exposure to the Lebanese hospitals and medical sector and related authorities is required
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of management at the senior managerial level including planning, budgeting, organizing, directing, motivating, controlling and decision making in the field of health care delivery
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of organizational behavior including employee relations, staff development and human resource management
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with physicians, staff, community members and vendors
- Proven experience in leading successful licensure, accreditation, and compliance efforts in a healthcare setting including Joint Commission International standards
- Skilled in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgement, discretion and decision making to achieve objectives
- Experienced/skilled critical thinker who uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to opportunities or threats to success
- Demonstrated record of managing a team of professional staff, senior level managers including the ability to lead, inspire and empower demonstrating confidence and executive presence
- Thoroughness, independence, and excellent written and oral communication skills demonstrating good rapport and cooperative relationships
- Ability to strive for exceeding patient and family expectations within the context of a healing environment and excellent patient experience with hospital policy and government regulations
- Bilingual: Arabic and English; French is a plus
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to LAUMC-SJH
