The Office of the Dean of Students is currently looking for an Academic Advisor reporting to the Director of Student Services. This position is based on Byblos Campus.Role Summary
The Academic Advisor is primarily responsible for assisting new students in understanding the purposes, opportunities, and challenges of higher education. He/she empowers students to develop and implement and educational plan consistent with their interests, abilities, and careers.
Additionally, the Academic Advisor assists in the registration process, selection and sequencing of courses and advises on admissions and transfer of credits, Lebanese Baccalaureate equivalence, change of major, exchange programs, petitions, academic difficulties, academic performance assessment, GPA, SAT requirements, and unofficial clearance.
He/she identifies students at risk and provides appropriate monitoring by offering advice about university regulations and the many services available to them. He/she participates in the general student Orientation and other student activities as needed and develops an action plan for creating a trusting relationship with the students and a special bond that promotes student retention and success.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Advises and informs current students on offered programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, on course selection, on academic regulations and all aspects related to academic requirements
- Provides one-on-one advising to all newly admitted students and assists them in registering their courses
- Ensures appropriate and timely follow-ups with students by explaining academic rules and the different services available to them so they take informed decisions to secure their progress and university success
- Screens and identifies students with academic difficulties, evaluates their situation and identifies the problems. Meets with them, establishes action plans, advises them and proposes mentoring activities in collaboration with all available resources at the University. Ensures the appropriate tracking and follow-up
- Confidentially investigates, evaluates, identifies students’ challenges (emotional, financial, medical, etc.) and strengths, and provides them with customized solutions through quality guidance and proper referrals
- In the framework of graduation, and in coordination with the Registrar’s office, assists in analyzing and evaluating files for clearance
- Participates in the revision of data in Banner, CAPP and in their updating procedure and details
- Works with the Advising team on updating and maintaining the central Advising website
- Creates a trusting relationship with students and LAU community and a special bond that promotes student retention and academic success
- Performs other duties pertinent to this job as assigned
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree
- Minimum 3 years of work experience in a related capacity
- Excellent written and spoken English; Arabic is a plus
- Communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Technical and computer skills: Working knowledge of MS Office; knowledge of People 365 and Banner is preferred
- Readiness to work closely with students on assisting them
- Willingness to learn about secondary and postsecondary curricula and the University’s academic regulations
- Ability to analyze student records and interpret, explain and apply university regulations
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to work under pressure, and meet strict deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exhibit high ethics
