The Office of the Chief of Staff & General Counsel is looking for a Lawyer reporting to the Chief of Staff & General Counsel.
This is a central position that is based on the Beirut campus and requires commuting to the Byblos campus and LAU Affiliates (including LAUMC-Rizk Hospital and LAUMC-Saint John’s Hospital).
Role Summary
The Lawyer is responsible for providing legal services, guidance, and support to the University, its New York Campus, affiliated medical centers, and related entities. The role ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and institutional policies; provides legal advice and support to various units, including operational, academic, and administrative units; handles contracts, dispute resolution, litigation, and corporate matters; and proactively identifies and mitigates legal risks to protect the interests of the University and its affiliates.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Conducts legal research and provides analysis, factual information, and guidance on legal and regulatory matters affecting the University and its affiliated entities
- Identifies, assesses, and proactively mitigates legal risks by providing preventive legal guidance and recommending appropriate risk-management strategies
- Drafts, reviews, negotiates, and revises contracts, agreements, memoranda, policies, and other legal documents to ensure legal sufficiency, protect the University’s interests, and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations
- Examines and evaluates legal documents for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to applicable laws and regulations
- Provides legal advice and guidance on institutional policies, procedures, governance matters, and administrative issues to ensure alignment with legal and regulatory requirements
- Supports and participates in negotiations related to institutional agreements, partnerships, and other transactions
- Assists in the management and resolution of disputes, claims, and litigation matters, including reviewing documents, gathering relevant information, coordinating with external counsel, and supporting case preparation and strategy
- Provides day-to-day legal advice and guidance to university departments, schools, administrative units, the New York Campus, and affiliated medical centers on matters that do not require direct involvement of the General Counsel
- Monitors legislative and regulatory developments and advises stakeholders on potential impacts to university operations
- Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
- Maintains legal records and documentation in accordance with institutional and regulatory standards
- Advises on governance issues related to Lebanese corporations including drafting of shareholder and board of directors’ minutes of meeting
- Performs other duties pertinent to this job as assigned by the direct supervisor
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Law (LL.B).
- Licensed to practice law and in good standing with the relevant Bar Association, where applicable
- Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible legal experience, preferably within higher education, healthcare, or similarly complex organizations
- Strong knowledge of contract law, corporate law, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, labor and employment law, dispute resolution, litigation, and other areas relevant to higher education and healthcare institutions
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex legal issues and provide practical, risk-based recommendations
- Excellent drafting, negotiation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to prepare clear and concise legal documents
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in English, French and Arabic
- Strong legal research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, and policies effectively
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail in reviewing legal and contractual documents
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to build effective working relationships and collaborate with various stakeholders
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and exercise sound professional judgment while maintaining confidentiality
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
Work Schedule
This role follows a standard Monday–Friday work schedule. The position may occasionally require availability after regular working hours, on weekends, or on holidays to support operational needs, ensure business continuity, and meet critical deadlines.
