Managing Editor
The Strategic Communications Department (Stratcom) is looking for a Managing Editor reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Strategic Communications. This is a central position that requires presence on both Beirut and Byblos campuses.Role Summary
The Managing Editor role is mainly responsible for overseeing the creation and execution of both print and online editorial content. This role is responsible for elevating LAU’s reputation by ensuring all published materials align with the university’s mission, vision, and brand values. By supervising a team of writers and editors, and aligning with the LAU brand and content strategies, the Managing Editor drives content quality, consistency, and innovation across diverse platforms, including social media and audiovisual productions, while fostering collaboration and engagement within the LAU community.
This position supervises the roles of Editor(s), Writer(s), and freelance writers/editors.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Directs and manages the writing of articles for LAU’s primary print and digital publications, including but not limited to the LAU News site, the Annual Report, LAU News Brief, school and departmental brochures, and additional collaterals
- Collaborates with both staff and freelance writers, providing detailed editing and feedback to uphold editorial standards
- Designs and implements content strategies that address key messaging objectives and target diverse audiences
- Promotes LAU’s content strategy that includes innovation and research, employability, entrepreneurship, and impact. Develops stories that demonstrate these themes through stories about faculty research, student experiences, and institutional priorities
- Actively contributes to original stories, articles, and copy for various university publications, ensuring the coverage is timely, relevant, and reflective of LAU’s mission and values
- Cultivates meaningful engagement within the LAU community by soliciting and incorporating feedback, facilitating open communication, and encouraging the submission of impactful stories from faculty, staff, and students, while ensuring that the storytelling is representative of the entire LAU institution
- Oversees the systematic organization and secures archiving of all materials generated by the editorial team, maintaining accessibility and compliance with institutional protocols
- Leads the development, periodic review, and regular updating of the editorial style guide, ensuring consistent application and compliance across all editorial teams and published materials
- Supervises content-related activities pertaining to the schools’ social media channels and websites if/when writers are assigned, ensuring high-quality and timely content delivery
- Develops and manages the office budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively
- Drives the continuous improvement of editorial content effectiveness by overseeing research and analysis conducted both before and after publication, using insights to refine processes and elevate editorial standards
- Supervises the prompt and comprehensive coverage of on- and off-campus events, ensuring all stories are published on schedule and meet the required level of time sensitivity for maximum impact
- Provides monthly, quarterly and board reports on the performance of LAU’s editorial and storytelling, its output, effectiveness and its breadth
- Develops and updates a content calendar based on themes and strategic messaging to be delivered across key channels (web, magazine, newsletter, etc.)
- Mentors and coaches writers, ensuring adherence to editorial guidelines and the university’s ethical standards. Monitors individual and team performance regularly. Tracks progress against objectives and timelines
- Organizes and delivers training to the team in editorial best practices, benchmark performance, and empowers them to continually enhance their skills and output quality
- Fosters a collaborative, cooperative, and respectful team culture that prioritizes accountability, continuous improvement, and staff success
- Reports periodically on the status and progress of work to the direct supervisor
- Performs other duties pertinent to this job as assigned
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communication Arts, Public Relations, Literature, or a related field
- Minimum 10 years of professional experience in developing and implementing content strategies and creating and implementing compelling storytelling with a minimum of 6 years in a relevant editorial function and 3 years in a supervisory role. Familiarity with the higher education sector is highly desirable
- Strong skills in copy editing and proofreading
- Excellent literacy and mastery of grammar
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to write both long-form and short-form articles
- Proven capability to meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure
- Versatility in writing and editing across diverse editorial voices and styles
- Experience in concept development for editorial content
- Familiarity with InDesign and advanced editing tools is a plus
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Arabic
- Critical thinking and effective problem-solving abilities
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Strong leadership capabilities and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team
Work Schedule
This role follows a standard Monday–Friday work schedule. However, due to the nature of managerial responsibilities, flexibility is required. The position may occasionally require availability after regular working hours, on weekends, or on holidays to support operational needs, ensure business continuity, and meet critical deadlines.
