Social Media Associate
The Strategic Communications Department (Stratcom) / Digital Communications Office is looking for a Social Media Associate reporting to Director of Digital Communications. This is a central position that is primarily based on Beirut campus with occasional commuting to Byblos campus.Role Summary
The Social Media Associate is responsible for the management of the institutional social media communities of the Lebanese American University. The associate will help define a content strategy at the university level and accordingly, execute a plan by overseeing and curating relevant content, engaging with the audience and being responsive to community feedback. The Social Media Associate is responsible for the implementation of the university’s social media policy, namely to ensure the continuity of numerous non-central, yet official, LAU-branded channels, and their adherence to the policy. The associate plays an instrumental role in the smooth operations of the university’s channels, in keeping the team informed of the latest in the field, and in ensuring evidence-based improvements to our strategy are constantly made.
The position works closely with social media specialists on both campuses, as well as other members of the Strategic Communications team.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Builds up LAU’s social media presence and increases awareness and engagement by building communities, managing channels, and maintaining relationships with other social media owners at LAU
- Develops and implements social media guidelines, processes, and tools to ensure all LAU-branded channels are consistent in terms of strategic and branding requirements
- Develops and updates procedures and guidelines for the large campus community of social media owners
- Integrates analytics, research, and brand listening into the decision-making and planning of social media strategies
- Sets up and manages paid online campaigns (content boosting and advertising), tracks performance, and reports
- Manages access of owners, team, collaborators, and partners to all channels; configures settings, and sets up tracking pixels when needed
- Engages with relevant content from other channels; listens to and responds regularly to followers on social media platforms with a consistent tone and voice that represents the university
- Ensures the timely utilization of social media for crisis communications; recommends messaging; monitors conversations to interact or to escalate internally; is available during evenings and weekends for crisis communications; provides context to guide crisis communications strategies and messaging
- Ensures the operational continuity of dozens of LAU-branded channels owned by different university entities, maintaining the necessary administrative-level authorizations in a secure and confidential manner; monitors content to verify adherence to the social media policy; assists in the creation of new official channels
- Helps identify and works with contractors to expand the team’s capacity in video production, photography, storytelling
- Collaborates with other departments to manage reputation, identifies key players and coordinates actions; advises other social media owners on community-building and LAU brand consistency; provides guidance or training to other social media owners upon request
- Develops recommendations on emerging digital trends and on responding to sensitive or complex issues
- Fosters relationships and builds internal networks with actual or potential social influencers (faculty, students, other)
- Stays up-to-date with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies relevant to the role
- Act as backup support for office staff as needed
- Performs other duties pertinent to this job as assigned
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, marketing, graphic design, advertising, liberal arts, literature, or related field
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant social media experience during which the candidate developed expertise in social media — algorithms, paid media, virality, intellectual property, ethical considerations, strengths of each platform, account setup
- Proficiency in professional-level social media management and listening software, such as Sprout, Hootsuite or Brandwatch
- Excellent English-language skills; full command of the language; ability to communicate fluently and effectively both with external audiences and with internal stakeholders
- Technology savvy; ability to find answers and resources; proficiency in generative AI
- Experience in data collection, analysis and reporting
- Proven skills in social media, communication, digital communications, digital marketing
- Advanced social media skills in community management, multi-platform community management tools, social media analytics tools
- Ability to devise procedures, workflows, and guidelines both for the internal team and for a large community of channel owners and creators
- Experience and skills in crafting messaging in English (Arabic a plus)
- Evolving knowledge of social media trends, strategies, developments, and best practices
- Collaborative, creative and innovative approach
- Ability to work under pressure
- Ability to work during weekends and evenings when needed
Work Schedule
The standard work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. However, due to the nature of the job, and/or to provide backup during staff absence, attendance may be required for late hours and during weekends/ holidays.
