Dr. Elie Badr
Assistant Provost for Academic Programs
Acting Dean, School of Architecture & Design

Since October 2009, Dr. Elie Badr has been the Assistant Provost for Academic Programs, a position he previously held under its former title, Assistant Vice President for Academic Programs. Since the beginning of the 2009–2010 academic year, Dr. Badr is also the Acting Dean of the newly established School of Architecture and Design.
In his role as the Assistant Provost for Academic Programs, Dr. Badr assists LAU’s seven schools in the creation of new programs, a task that encompasses developing programs, securing approval from relevant councils, obtaining government decrees, and preparing the relevant materials for the New York State Education Department. Dr. Badr also works with the Provost to oversee the ongoing NEASC accreditation process.
In this key role, Dr. Badr also contributes to the assessment of learning at LAU by overseeing the function of the Center for Program and Learning Assessment (CPLA), which helps schools develop and implement systems for student learning assessment. Dr. Badr also oversees in-class evaluations across the university every semester, in addition to coordinating between the Information Technology (IT) office and Academic Affairs in regards to the implementation of university-wide academic systems and software.
Dr. Badr joined LAU in 1997 as Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and was promoted to the position of Associate Professor with limited tenure in October 2001, and to Full Professor in 2009. Between 1999 and 2003, he served as the Faculty Representative of the Byblos Campus. He was appointed to the role of Interim Dean of the School of Engineering and Architecture in July 2003, in which he remained until September 2005. In October 2005, Dr. Badr was appointed to the position of Assistant Vice President for Academic Programs. He has also held a faculty position at the American University of Beirut from 1988 to 1991.
Dr. Badr earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1994. With an extensive publication and research record, he is the author and co-author of numerous papers on residual stress analysis, metal fatigue, machine design and energy forecasting and analysis. He has presented several papers in local and international conferences, and also teaches as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at LAU.
In addition to serving as a consultant for many companies and executing several mechanical engineering projects, Dr. Badr is an active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a registered professional engineer in the Order of Engineers in Lebanon.
