Dr. Haidar Harmanani

Interim Dean, School of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Haidar Harmanani was appointed interim dean of the School of Arts and Sciences in September 2023.

After joining LAU as an assistant professor of computer engineering and science in 1994, Dr. Harmanani rose through the ranks to chair the department of computer science and mathematics, and subsequently served as the school’s assistant dean in 2011 prior to becoming associate dean between 2012-2014, and again in 2018.

During his tenure, he led the first successful American Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accreditation review for the Computer Science program, and has chaired the ABET computer science assessment committee since 2010.

The self-study was selected by ABET Professional Services for being exemplary and was displayed at the ABET Symposia 2011 and 2012. Among other funding, Dr. Harmanani helped to secure a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)’s American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) to provide software and hardware for starting the bioinformatics program at LAU.

Dr. Harmanani is a program evaluator for the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), anABET computer engineering and computer science program evaluator and an NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute ambassador.

His research interests include design automation, high-level synthesis, design for testability, applications of artificial intelligence and deep learning, as well as parallel computing. His areas of expertise and publications vary from social network analysis and cloud computing to optimization algorithms and financial modeling. 

Moreover, he has contributed to various international conferences and was involved in serving on program committees for the IEEE NEWCAS conference, the ABET Symposium, the IEEE Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems and the IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems, among others. Additionally, he has taken on key roles as the general chair of the 18th IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems (ICECS 2011) and as the Technical Program chair of the 6th International Design and Test Workshop (IDT 2011).

Dr. Harmanani holds a BS, MS and PhD in Computer Engineering from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, US.
